SMALLSAT DEPLOYABLE ANTENNAS

Deployable VHF band log-periodic antenna

DUAL POLARIZATION LOG-PERIODIC ANTENNA FOR FUTURE EARTH OBSERVATION RADAR WORKING IN THE RANGE OF 40-50MHz

The antenna was intended to demonstrate the feasibility of the VHF radar mission in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), aimed at investigating subsurface water content - reaching up to 50 meters below ground - in Earth's polar and arid regions. Within this mission concept, the deployable antenna constitutes a key subsystem of the overall instrumentation. It would be the first Earth observation radar working in the range of 40-50MHz.

The VDEA antenna is based on dual polarization log-periodic antenna and comprised by 9 dipole stages, which harness routing was meticulously integrated in the deployable boom. The harness and excitation is compatible with high-power operation.

The antenna was characterized in 0g condition outdoor, using an unique drone-based measurement method.

Deployable UHF/L-band Helix Antennas

QUAD-HELIX DEPLOYABLE AMTENNA FOR NAVIGATION (GNSS) OR COMMUNICATIONS (loT, M2M) APPLICATIONS

Designed to ensure an impressive compactness ratio while at the same time providing adequate performance in terms of electrical and mechanical performance. The antenna consists of the radiating part (radiating elements and mechanical support structure) and the matching network. All this is housed in a canister with standard dimensions to be able to be housed in a cubesat or smallsat.

The antenna architecture allows for an isoflux-type radiation pattern that can be adapted according to the mission orbit for optimal coverage of the Earth’s surface. The antenna is circularly polarised and has a maximum gain of approximately 6dBi at the edges.

EARTH OBSERVATION APPLICATIONS

We are committed to develop new space antenna solutions. In partnership with COMET Ingeniería and PROSIX Ingeniería, the companies are working to develop new deployable antenna solutions providing cubesats and small satellites with observation capabilities unprecedented to date.

Under a GSTP project from ESA, the companies are developing a modular deployable antenna reflector (MODAR) suitable for Earth Observation applications. Two configurations will be ready beginning 2024:

  • Ka-band deployable mesh reflector antenna specifically designed for altimetry applications.

  • X-band deployable mesh reflector antenna with feed cluster specifically designed for SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) applications.
